Who is Abhijit Mahato??

Abhijit Mahato, A native of Tatanagar, India, was pursuing a doctorate in engineering at Duke University. His website doesnt really tell much about him either. Some basic info about where he went school, a few hobbies and how to reach him. The website looks like it needs some work.

But that work will never happen.

Abhijit Mahato was shot and killed on Jan. 18, 2008. The killer, after taking a few BS items from Mr. Mahato, remained "on the run" until just this week, when he was captured for yet another killing. This time, the victim was Eve Carson, student body president of UNC Chapel Hill.

Notice any difference in the two victims?

Yeah..i noticed it too.

This whole week, you couldnt turn from channel to another without hearing about Eve Carson and the hunt for her killers. How many of you saw the photo from the ATM camera.

I thought about people in my family that resemble the dude. Everybody was on the hunt. People were outraged. I watched Nancy Grace (probably for the first time) and listened to the callers. People wanting to know if the killers had gang ties, if they were related (dont you know all black people are related), if they had prior records. Well apparently they did, but it wasnt a big enough issue to lock them up for past crimes....

Until they killed a white girl.

There...

I said it.

This just proves the point of my fellow bloggers out there.

There is no value of life equal to that of a white female. And the rest of us need to get use to that fact. And I am guilty too. Had Mrs. Balogger not informed me of the death of Mr. Mahato and how it was related to Eve Carson, I wouldnt have given a second thought about it. I very vaguely remember this happening a few weeks ago. This isnt news in another state or city. This is my local news reporting both crimes. Cant remember one, never forget the other.

This should be a wake up call to everybody, because had the police pursued Mr. Mahato's killer with the fervency and zeal that they did with Eve Carson, then guess what.....Eve Carson would be alive right now. A life is a life and whether we think its important or not, no murder should go unsolved. Had eve Carson not met her untimely demise, Abhijit Mahato's death would go down in files with countless other unsolved (and unimportant) murders. And that not right. Being a black man myself, it bothers me, as it should anyone living in the USA who isnt a white female, that little to no effort would go into the solving of my murder. Anything short of someone saying "I did it", or a damn good eye-witness, i might as well dig my own grave and save the police some paperwork.

The family of Eve Carson should really think about their next steps. I know pursuing legal action against the authorities for the death of her may not seem like the best thing, but its gonna take cases like these two to get the point across.

************************

According to the arrest warrant, Lovette allegedly stole a cell phone, wallet and an iPod – with a combined value of about $300 – before Mahato was shot to death inside his apartment at 1600 Anderson St.

"There was information that investigators obtained that the victim's telephone had been used … the night or early morning he was murdered," Cline said.
Investigators learned numbers on the phone traced back to a number associated with Demario James Atwater

************************

That right there tells me that the police were not as concerned about finding Mahato's killer as they were in finding Eve's killer. They had the cell phone. Atwater had used it, why did it take almost 2months later to catch him? Now, we are talking about 2 different police departments and for anyone unfamiliar with the two cities know the cultural differences between Chapel Hill and Durham, NC so that may shed a little light on the situation.

Eve Carson didnt have to die guys.

Her killers damn near lived at the courthouse, with all the appearances and probation hearings they had. One of them was in court like 3 days before her death for a probation violation. Meanwhile the detectives assigned to solving Mahato's murder were probably sitting at Dunk'n Donuts, Krispy Kreme, etc. waiting for the killer to pull a John Doe (from the movie se7en) and walk into the station house with bloody fingertips screaming "DETECTIVE!!!!...you are looking for me".

I keep reiterating that Eve didnt have to die, BUT it took her death to bring the killers of Abhijit Mahato to justice.

We gotta do better guys.

And i blame the media. It was ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox and all the rest that shoved Eve Carson down our throats.

"Tragic Death on the campus of UNC"

But what about the tragedy on the campus of Duke....which is only about 10miles away from UNC?

Why is a white life more important than any other?

Why are they still searching for the killers of Natalie Holloway and havent found Stepha Henry. Why are they still following Drew Peterson around hoping that he will say "I did it" but no one knows who Simone Celestin is? Why do I have to google "Dunbar Village"?

Why did it take linking the killer of Abhijit Mahato to Eve Carson for me to write about either case...

I am at fault too.

well stated, especially WRT to the fact that Eve's death could have been avoided had Durham even cared about Abhijit.

That was perfect. I'm glad you "said it." Somebody needed to! Until we all start sayin it more and more, nothing will change.

well written...and everything you spoke was the truth.

It's still happening, you know. There was some progress in the trial procedures today, and WUNC reported on it. Eve Carson, Eve Carson, Eve Carson. I actually got online to see if perhaps it had turned out that the two murders weren't linked after all....otherwise, wouldn't they have said so?

Yes, Eve's story is a bit more compelling - the student body president, the car jacking, the ATM card, etc. But I'm with you - mostly, it's that she's a white girl. That she looks like the girl we could all know.

But it doesn't matter, and this is, as you say, BS.

It is heart breaking story especially may be because I knew Mahato and walked in same campus for months together but that doesn't change any of the facts.

We keep hearing about equality but it has always been just the talk and probably a little has changed over the years. We just borrowed the notion of equality and keep talking about it without actually understanding what equality means - probably it is same as all fingers being equal; probably not.

When an incidence like this happen it jolts us and we are shocked - indeed we could have saved Eva but so what it happened to Mahato and until it happened to Eva it happened to some one whom most American's cannot relate to.

A part of the issue is the way popular media disseminates information in order to increase the ratings and publish/push stories which are more lucrative - in the end more people mean better advertisements and in turn better revenues. But we can't blame them either we are all at fault and this is how insensitive we have become.
